Counting Sheep: Fingerplay & Flannel Activity

Counting Sleeps’ Sheep
Words and Actions by CK Emanuel

I count the sheep– 1, 2, 3
MOVE INDEX FINGER AS IF COUNTING OBJECTS
HOLD UP FINGERS AS COUNTS
With wool like a cloudy sea
LOOK UP, HANDS OVERHEAD AND MOVE IN WAVY PATTERN
I count the sheep– 4, 5, 6
AS BEFORE
As they jump a fence of sticks
ONE HAND MAKES A FENCE PERPENDICULAR TO BODY;
HAVE OTHER HAND FISTED AND “JUMP” IT OVER FENCE
I count the sheep– 7, 8, 9
AS BEFORE
On imagined hills of mine
BRING FINGERTIPS TOGETHER TO FASHION ROUNDED HILL
I count the sheep– 10 and more
AS BEFORE; FOR “MORE”, TURN PALMS FLAT  AND OUT
When I start to drift and snore
HANDS TOGETHER, TOUCHING SIDE OF FACE

Read on for flannel board adaptation.

Participation Age Range: 6 months to 8 years

Skills Utilized/Reinforced: Fine motor skills ; STEM/STEAM ; Numbers/Counting

Possible Modifications: For the youngest crowd, one may wish to only count, rather than doing two fingerplay actions per Sheep.Countline.
