Train: Fingerplay

Little Red Train Car
Words by CK Emanuel
To the tune of: Bumping Up and Down in My Little Red Wagon

Chugging through the town
BEND ARMS AT ELBOW AND MOVE ARMS IN A CIRCLE
in my little red train car,
TOUCH PALM TO CHEST ;
MAKE FIST IN AIR AS IF BLOWING A TRAIN’S WHISTLE
Chugging through the town in my little red train car,
REPEAT ACTIONS ABOVE
Chugging through the town in my little red train car,
REPEAT ACTIONS ABOVE
Climb aboard
CURVE ARM UP AT ELBOW FOR A “COME ON” GESTURE
And ride with me
MAKE FISTS WITH THUMBS OUT; TOUCH THUMBS TO CHEST

Participation Age Range: 6 months to 5 years

Skills Utilized/Reinforced: Gross/fine motor skill ;  Colors (for the modified version)

Possible Modifications: For the younger set (6 to 17 months), I would recommend omitting the action for “my.” If the crowd significantly favors the younger side, keep the chugging action through

The song would also work well for a circle activity where the circle all “chugs” along.

Additionally, if preferred, the song could be stretched so that each person in the room is added in a new train car after the “ride with me.” The song could be repeatedly song each time or new colors could be added “my little red blue green train cars.” The storyleader could be the engine pulling so that the line resembles a “follow the leader” as it journeys around the room.

Consider pairing with the train prop.
