Australian Bird Song: Fingerplay

Kookaburra
Song by Marion Sinclair; Actions by C.K. Emanuel

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
HOLD FIST UP, OTHER HAND POINTS TO FIST
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
MAKE CROWN BY PLACING HANDS ON SIDE OF HEAD
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra,
PAT BELLY AND SWAY FROM SIDE TO SIDE
Gay your life must be!
HANDS OUT TO SIDES, PALMS FACING UP

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
HOLD FIST UP, OTHER HAND POINTS TO FIST
Eating all the gum drops he can see.
TOUCH FINGERTIPS TO MOUTH ALTERNATING HANDS
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
   EXTEND HAND, PALM FACING OUT
Save some there for me!
   SHAKE POINTER FINGER

Participation Age: 1 year to 8 years

Skills Utilized/Reinforced: Fine motor skills; Knowledge of Australian Wildlife (Kookaburra) ; Emotion awareness (Happy/merry) ; Concept of sharing

Modifications: Playing the real life sound of the kookaburra was a great science tie-in. The kids really enjoyed hearing them “laugh.” Tt also provided a understanding of the line  “Laugh, Kookaburra” and “merry.”

I also showed an image of a gum tree and provided basic information about them.

If you are doing a country/continent/travel theme, I would encourage the use of an atlas and pointing out where Australia (and the kookaburras) is compared to where your Library/school is located.

Themes: Australia ;  Birds ; Emotion/Happy ; Virtues/Sharing ; Food ; Silly/Funny
