Library Book Year: Fingerplay Song

The Library Books
C.K. Emanuel
To the tune of “Calendar Girls” by Neil Sedaka

I read, I read, I read the library books,
HANDS TOUCH CHEST; PUT PALMS TOGETHER THEN OPEN HANDS LIKE BOOK
So many library books!
HANDS OUT TO EITHER SIDE; DO ACTION ABOVE FOR BOOK
I read, I read, I read the library books.
REPEAT ACTIONS OF FIRST LINE
Each and every day of the year.
USE FINGER TO POINT ALONG AN IMAGINARY TIME LINE ON EACH SYLLABLE.

Source of Original Song: Sedaka, Neil. “Calendar Girl” AZ Lyrics. Aldon Music Inc., Robert Mellin Inc., Universal Music, 1961. NEIL SEDAKA LYRICS. Web. 25 July 2015.

Participation Age: 6 mos to 5 years

Skills Utilized/Reinforced: Fine motor skills; Knowledge of the library; Awareness of meter/speech rhythm; Awareness of time (day shorter than year)

Modifications: May wish to change “read” back to the original “love” and hug self for the corresponding actions.

Consider using fingerplay as opener (or closer) for the topic of time, in particular how many days in a year.

This may also allow for comparing/contrasting discussion regarding the quantities of days and how many books there are in the library. Depending on age level/skill, you can utilize more than/less than or even rounding techniques.

Themes: Library ; National Library Week ; Books ; Reading ; Time ; More/Less
