Fairy Tale Jack and the Beanstalk: Fingerplay

Jack’s Beanstalk
Text and Actions by CK Emanuel

Young Jack believed in impossible magic.
WAVE HAND AS IF AS MAGIC WAND
He traded a cow for a handful of beans
TOUCH CHEST WITH FINGERTIPS BEFORE LAYING HAND FLAT IN FRONT OF YOU, PALM UP. THEN, BRING FINGERTIPS BACK TO CHEST
and his mother thought it tragic.
TRACE THE PATH OF A TEAR DOWN CHEEK
The beans were tossed onto the ground
MOVE HAND AS IF THROWING SOMETHING
and during the night they sprouted.
ONE ARM LIES FLAT HORIZONTALLY, MOVE OTHER HAND AS IF “SPROUTING” BEHIND IT, WIGGLING FINGERS
The beanstalk grew tall and round,
RAISE ARMS OVERHEAD, THEN OUT TO SIDES
And in the morning, Jack climbed it.
MOVE ONE FIST OVER THE OTHER LIKE CLIMBING ROPE
Up at the top lived a mean old giant,
MAKE A SCARY FACE, HANDS AT WAIST
But brave Jack was ever so quiet.
HOLD A FINGER IN FRONT OF LIPS
In the Giant’s kitchen, Jack safely hid
HANDS IN FRONT OF FACE
Until the old Giant began to snore,
PALMS TOGETHER WITH BACK OF ONE HAND TOUCHING CHEEK
Then down the stalk Jack swiftly slid;
HOLD 1 FINGER UP, MOVE IT IN A DOWNWARDS SPIRAL
The Giant awoke and quickly gave chase
MAKE 2 UPSIDE-DOWN “V”; HAVE ONE CHASE AFTER THE OTHER
For Jack had stolen  his treasure.
START WITH HANDS OUT, BRING HANDS TO CHEST
A blow from an axe ended the race
HAND UP BENT AT ELBOW TO BE “BEANSTALK”, USE OTHER HAND TO “CHOP” IT
As the beanstalk fell to the earth.
HAVE BEANSTALK HAND “FALL” INTO OTHER HAND
With the mean Giant’s treasure,
TOUCH CHEST WITH BOTH HANDS
Jack’s life was full of joy and mirth.
HANDS ON BELLY AS IF LAUGHING
